たまにブログなどで見かける「previous」。
アメリカのドラマとかでも注意して聞いてると、冒頭に「Previously on 〜」と言ってたりします。
「previous」は「前の、以前の」という意味なのですが、ちょっと使い方に注意が必要な単語です。
「previous」は形容詞で、
- 前の、以前の
- 事前の
- 先の
という意味です。
発音は［príːviəs（プリーヴィァス）］。
「前の」というと、「former」という単語もがありますね
「former」も「previous」もどちらも日本語だと「前の」という意味ですが、
- former：時間的に前
- previous：順序が前
という違いがあります。
「previous」が表すのは、順番や順序が、前、なんです。
時間の流れではない。
ややこしいっすね。
よくブログ記事の下にある
- previous（prevとも省略される）
これは今読んでいる記事の前の投稿という意味ですね。
ちなみに反対語は「next」か「following」が使われます。
つまりブログ記事を例に取ると、「previous」は「順番的に前」ということなので、
- previous：ひとつ前、直前の記事
「former」も「前の」という意味だけど「時間的に前」なので、過去の、昔のという意味、
- former：過去の記事
という違いです。
例えば、仮に毎日更新のブログだとして、1月1日のブログ記事の
- previous：12月31日の記事
- former：12月31日以前の過去の記事
という感じでしょうか。
他に、今の前の仕事という時は「my previous job」と言えます。
「previous」の反対語は
- subsequent：時間や順序が後の、次の、それに続く
- following：次の、〜に続いて、〜の後に
- later：後で、その後
- next：次の、今度の
などがあります
英英辞典の説明によると
- subsequent：happening or coming at some time after something else
- following：happening or coming immediately after something – used about periods of time, or parts of a piece of writing
- later：coming in the future or after something else
- next：happening or coming immediately after another one
という微妙な違いがあります
とりあえず、「previous」は以前に起こったこと、「subsequent、following、later、next」はその後に発生するイベントのこと、というふうに覚えておきましょう
- Knowledge has been passed down to subsequent generation.
（知識はその次の世代へと次々に伝えられてきた） - I’ve already read the subsequent chapter.
（もう私は次の章を読んでしまった） - Listen carefully and answer the following questions.
（よく聞いて次の質問を回答してください） - I will meet you later at the restaurant.
（後でレストランで会おう） - I’ll take the next bus.
（次のバスに乗ります）
- How are they different from the previous models?
（前のモデルとはどこが違うんですか？） - I worked for my previous company for three years.
（私は前の会社で３年間働きました。） - The accident happened previous to my arrival.
（その事故は私がくる前に起こった。） - Unfortunately, I’ve got a previous appointment.
（残念ながら先約があります。） - Our sales last year were less than half those of the previous year.
（昨年の当社の売り上げは前年の半分以下でした。） - The previous owners of this house moved to England.
（この家の以前の持ち主はイギリスに引っ越した。） - My previous employer didn’t pay me overtime.
（前の雇用主は私に残業代を払ってくれなかった。） - This condition is illustrated in Figure 3 on the previous page.
（この条件は、前のページの図３に示されています。） - Please disregard my previous email, and use the attached images instead.
（前のメールは無視して、代わりに添付の画像を使用してください。） - You need to add a link to the previous page that the user was on before coming to the page.
（ユーザがこのページへ来る前にいた「前のページ」へ戻るリンクを加える必要がある。）
ついでに海外ドラマの冒頭でよく聞く
- Previously on 番組名：前回の番組
要するに「前回のあらすじ」ということですね。
「previously」は「previous」の副詞で、
- （今より、ある時点より）前に、以前に、先に、前もって
という意味です。
