【週末英語#287】「色々あるんだよ」と言いたい時は「There's a lot going on.」

日常会話で、

「いろいろあるんだよ」

って言いますよね。

具体的いなにがどうとまでは言わないけど、「まぁ色々」は便利な言葉です。

英語では「There’s a lot going on.」と言います。

• There’s a lot going on：色々ある
• going on：進行中である、起こっている
• 「A lot」だけでもOK

There’s a lot going on：色々ある

• There’s a lot going on.

意味としては、

• 色々あるんだよ
• いろんなことがありますよ

と、細々といろいろなことが同時に起きている、進行してる、とか、イベントなどがいっぱい開催されてる、内容が盛りだくさんといったことを伝えたいときに使えるフレーズ。

• Pretty busy. There’s a lot going on lately.
  （超忙しい。最近色々あってさ。）
• Looks like there’s a lot going on in town.
  （街ではイベントが盛りだくさんみたいよ。）
• Well, there were a lot of things going on. 
  （まぁ、色々あったんだよ……）

going on：進行中である、起こっている

「going on」は、

• 進行中である
• 起こっている
• 始まっている
• ～に近づいている
• ほぼ〜である

という意味。

「There’s a lot going on.」は、

• there is a lot：たくさんある
• going on：進行中のもの
  ＝色々ある

という感じですね。

「A lot」だけでもOK

「色々ね…」は、そのまんま

• a lot
• many things

だけでもOKらしいです。

色々あるけど、いちいち説明するのもめんどくて「色々ね」と集約しちゃいたい時は、日本語でも英語でもおんなじなんですねぇ。

• A lot happened…
  （色々ありまして……）
• What happened? ー A lot.
  （どうしたの ー 色々あって）
• What are you thinking? ー Well, a lot of things.
  （なに考えてるの？ ー まぁいろいろ）
